Andriol (testosterone undecanoate)
April 4, 2008

Andriol (testosterone undecanoate capsules) is prescribed to you by a doctor. It is an orally active testosterone preparation and is used to replace the natural hormone, testosterone, when your body is unable to produce enough on its own. Each capsule contains 40 mg of testosterone undecanoate in dissolved form. A single Andriol capsule is a soft oval gelatin capsule, orange in color, with a yellow oily fill and marked D3V on the outside. Andriol Testocaps is a novel formulation that allows storage at room temperature for three years. Andriol 40 mg can be prescribed in bottles of 60 or 100 capsules. Andriol Testocaps are available in blister-pack form. With adequate dosing Andriol and Andriol Testocaps restore plasma testosterone levels within the normal range. For optimal absorption, Andriol and Andriol Testocaps must be taken with food. Andriol has been prescribed for treatment of testosterone deficiency and related conditions for more than 20 years. Andriol capsules are available in more than 80 countries worldwide. Andriol Testocaps is expected to become available in 2002.
How Does It Work?
Each Andriol capsule contains the testosterone molecule attached to a long-chain fatty acid dissolved in oil to enable absorption into the circulation. When taken with food, the testosterone is absorbed from the digestive system for distribution throughout the body. This is the unique quality which allows Andriol to be made orally bioavailable.
Who Should Take Andriol?
Your healthcare provider will carefully consider your symptoms and make a decision regarding whether Andriol therapy would benefit you. Andriol is taken in men with low-testosterone symptoms, when clearly indicated.
Testosterone replacement therapy indicators include:
- Decreased libido
- Decline in physical energy
- Loss of strength and muscle mass
- Decreased sexual performance
- Increased body fat
- Low bone density
Along with your doctor’s evaluation of your physical and psychological symptoms, he or she will also want to order blood tests to measure the level of “bioavailable” testosterone throughout your body. Expect your physician to monitor your progress and your overall health while on Andriol therapy. And if you’re like the majority of men, you will experience very few if any side effects.
Andriol Dosage
Your healthcare provider will adjust the dosage according to your initial response from the medication. A dosage of 120-160 mg (3-4 capsules) taken daily for the first two to three weeks is recommended followed by a gradual decrease. Recent studies have indicated that 3-4 capsules for the entire treatment period is adequate. Remember to store Andriol at room temperature (15°C-25°C). Andriol Testocaps should be stored at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C. Your doctor will normally prescribe that Andriol be taken in two divided doses and with meals. If the daily dose is an uneven number of capsules, take the larger number of capsules in the morning. Keep your prescription in its original package, in order to protect it from light.
Andriol Side Effects
Like all medicines, Andriol may cause side effects. Some side effects may occur when you first begin taking Andriol. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.
If you are taking Andriol, you may experience:
- unusual decrease or increase in sexual desire
- fluid retention in the tissues, usually marked by swelling of ankles or feet
- prolonged abnormal, painful erection of the penis
In elderly men:
- problems with passing urine
